Positive psychology

Positive psychology emerged as a response to pathological psychology, which has been focused on for a long time by scientists through multiple psychological studies and research, such as studying cases of illness, disorder, and psychological abnormalities.

Positive psychology

Positive psychology, as one of the interests of psychology, is concerned with topics such as: psychological happiness, the development of thinking, imagination and innovation, cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, optimism and psychological hardiness, gratitude and gratitude, empathy and social support, as they are areas concerned with improving the quality of life and preventing diseases that may arise when... Life is without value or meaning.

What is positive psychology

When defining positive psychology, two definition paths must be distinguished:

  1. The first is what can be called post-psychological (beyond psychological), which conveys the idea that the main goal of positive psychology is to restore balance to psychology at the level of research and applied practice.
  2. The second path is the pragmatic path (practical employment), which is concerned with what so-called positive psychology psychologists do or perform in relation to their research, the applications of this research and their areas of interest.

Martin Seligman defines positive psychology as: the scientific study of positive emotions and the strengths that enable individuals and societies to flourish.

Muhammad Najeeb Al-Sabwa refers to positive psychology as: the scientific study of a theoretical and applied nature of positive experiences, positive individual personal qualities or traits, and the psychological and social institutions that work to facilitate and develop these experiences and qualities and advance them to create a person with an effective and influential personality.

Postulates of positive psychology

The cognitive base from which positive psychology begins is represented by three postulates:

  •  Human nature cannot be reduced to negative aspects or positive aspects. A person’s authenticity, the true essence of his existence, and his path to achieving psychological integrity are achieved through his awareness of his strengths and positive potentials and investing in them, and at the same time his awareness of his weaknesses and the manifestations of his shortcomings in containing and overcoming them.

  • Mental health and a good life do not simply mean the absence of disease or the absence of a person’s life from manifestations of illness or deficiency, but rather it essentially includes his orientation toward improving and improving the quality of his life, expressing his authenticity, and realizing his potential, leading to fruition, contentment, and prosperity.

  • The description of the good life lies in its structure and its moral and ethical nature, and not merely in the need for a theory of disorder that stands in opposition to it.

Objectives of positive psychology

Positive psychology aims to expand the circle of interest of therapeutic clinical psychology so that it builds and develops the strengths of the human personality, in addition to ridding psychological patients of their abnormal habits and psychological disorders.

The main goal of positive psychology is to bring about a qualitative change in the mainstream of psychology to include studies of strengths, positive traits, positive emotions, and positive personality within its scope of interests.

One of the most prominent goals of positive psychology is that it focuses on improving a person’s functional psychological performance, beyond psychological health. Positive psychologists examine the determinants of human happiness and focus on the factors that enable a person to live a satisfactory life in which he achieves his ambitions.

One of the goals of positive psychology is for the individual to be able to make greater use of his abilities to achieve satisfaction with self and life.

One of the most important goals of positive psychology is to identify and understand the factors that enable individuals, societies, and institutions to flourish. This is achieved by employing the best scientific methods in studying human problems and ridding them of images of psychological suffering, not by focusing on these dysfunctional images, but rather by focusing on the strengths of the person. And positive virtues.

Advantages of positive psychology

Positive psychologists believe that positive psychology is characterized by the following:

  1. Studying all the paths that lead to the success of individuals’ lives instead of studying failure modes and human weaknesses.
  2. Paying attention to the ideal general psychological performance of individuals.
  3. Focusing on positive human characteristics, such as: strengths, virtues, and morals, and developing positive subjective experiences such as happiness and quality of life.
  4. Positive employment of strengths and positive emotions; To improve the quality of people's lives and achieve what is known as happiness.
